The Construction Paper Portrait assignment is proof-positive, that (motivated) Middle School Art students are capable of producing fine-quality art projects. I'm always on the lookout for fun projects, and, though this one was one of the more difficult, the student gallery from my classroom website for the School of Creative and Performing Arts this semester portrays the success of (some of) our students.
The other cool thing about this project is that it is unique to these students' portfolios. That is to say, none of the other Art teachers at SCPA (currently) do this assignment. The benefit for my 7th-graders is that when they audition for a spot in the freshman class at SCPA, no other candidates (other than the ones who took my class) will have this in their portfolios.
